The mouth of the harbour of Mahón being its bottleneck, as it does not allow ships with a length beyond 240 metres to enter, Cala Figuera appeared to be a suitable place for a new cruiser dock and a sports jetty.
This decision taken by the Port Authorities stirred up polemic, since a various houses and business buildings had to be desmantled.
The chemical company CLH (Compañia Logística de Hídrocarburos), established in Cala Figuera since 1957, had to abandon its old deposits, in disuse since 2009, to make way for a plot of 7,000 square metres.
