Monte Toro is the highest point in Menorca, rising 357 metres, right in the geographical centre of the island.
Its name has nothing to do with a bull ("toro" in Spanish), but comes from the Arabic word Al-Thor meaning highest point.
It is situated just outside the village of Es Mercadal.
Sanctuary
On top of the hill is a covent with a
courtyard,
well, and
refectory.
Monuments
Inside the 17th century Renaissance church is a statue of the "Virgen del Toro", Menorca‘s patroness saint.
Outside, you‘ll see an imposing statue of "Jesus of the Sacred Heart", erected in memory of the Menorcans that fell in the Spanish-Moroccan wars of the early 20th century.
View
On a clear day, the summit offers a wide view of the whole island and even of the mountain peaks of its neighbouring island, Mallorca.
Service
There is a cafeteria with an outdoor terrace and a gift and clothes shop.
Access
Monte Toro is well signed from Es Mercadal. If you come from Mahón, turn right just before Es Mercadal where you see an ancient locomotive exhibited in a roundabout.
You approach the summit by a steep winding road that is about 3 kilometers long.
