In the eighties, Mademoiselle Laetitia Lara, a French architecture student, came to Menorca and visited a some sandstone quarries.
This was the beginning of what is now the non-profit Lithica Association at the site of the former Pedreras de s'Hostal, disused since 1994. In 2011 this Association was awarded the Pere Prats environmental prize.
These former quarties are situated at 1 kilometer from Ciutadella in the camí vell, the "Old Way", close to the new cementary. It is best to take the southern by-pass that leads to Cala'n Bosch.
At a roundabout with a tall structure called the "Portal of the Sea", you will find the exit.
A walk through these quarries is quite something to experience:
You will see traces left by centuries of chiseling and sawing in the soft sandstone, steep walls, geometrically-cut canyons, mazes and the remains of a Medieval garden.
There is also a museum.
During the sommer months the Assocation is holding music events and other gatherings at this post-industrial heritage park.
