Alaior
The village of Alaior (you may also come across the spelling Alayor) has a population of some 10,000 inhabitants.
It is situated 12 km from Mahón.
Its patron saint is Saint Lawrence; for this reason the patron festivals are celebrated the weekend after August 10.
In Alaior there is the only off-centre extension of the University of the Balearic Islands on Menorca offering:
- bachelor's degree
- first and second cycle studies
- postgraduate studies
- business science
- nursing
- teachers' training and
- law studies
Its historical buildings include:
- the church
- the Patio de Sa Lluna (a former Franciscan friary)
- and various wind mills.
Products are cheese and ensaimadas (a typical pastry product).
